Bar Rescue - Money Bar (Murphy's Law) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Reno, Nevada to try to rescue Murphy's Law.  The owner Gary is a former pilot and opened the bar with his former girlfriend Maria and friend "Nelly" in 2011.  Gary and Maria each own 40% of the bar while Nelly owns the remaining 20% despite Maria not putting any money into the business.  Gary is losing about $2,000 a month and is supposedly only "4 months away from losing everything."

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Murphy's Law was renamed to Money Bar.  It seems that the bar has gone back to their old name and still goes by Murphy's Law.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Murphy's Law since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:

There are only 2 reviews of the bar since the makeover (from Yelp):
  • "Had to check the place out after the remodel. They did a really great job, the place looks awesome!! Problem was I ordered a beer it was not cold so I asked for a White Russian, not too obscure the bartender said it'll be a minute, walked to the other side of the bar and was clearly googling the recipe. Not a problem but still got the liquors wrong.... The menu was printed in bold on a sheet of white paper. Guess that's why there was only one other person there :( place looks great hope they learn to chill a beer or make a drink soon!!"

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in March of 2015.
  • Here are 2 preview videos from the Spike TV website - Video 1 Intro, Video 2
  • Here is the Money Bar website set up by Bar Rescue, which is just a menu.
  • It appears they have re-installed their Murphy's Law signs and still go by Murphy's Law (Link 1, Link 2).
  • Here is the Murphy's Law Facebook Page.... And here is a more recent one
  • Here is the Money Bar Facebook Page, which doesn't have much activity since they went back to being Murphy's Law.
  • Here are the Facebook Pages of Gary (Owner), Maria (Owner), Wendy (bartender)
  • Judging by Maria's posts, such as this one in reference to the changing back to Murphy's Law,  she is still at the bar.
  • In season 2 of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer renamed JA Murphy's to Murphy's Law.  This Murphy's Law had no relation to the bar from season 2 (which is closed).

Conclusion:

There wasn't too much information on this bar, but it appears despite Bar Rescue changing the name from Murphy's Law to Money Bar, they have decided to go by their old name of Murphy's Law.  There weren't many reviews of the bar, but a review complained about the bartenders and stated that there was only one other person there.  As the bar has went back to their old name, it appears they didn't keep too many of the changes made by Bar Rescue.  It also appears that Maria is still involved with the bar.

UPDATE - Murphy's Law closed in October 2016 - More information on the closure.

  1. If Gary is still allowing Maria to be involved in the bsr, then it's safe to say that the writing is on the wall. Pay Nellie the 25 grand and go back to being an sir pilot, Gary

  2. That maria is a user if she had any class she would give back the percent he gave her in the bar cause she did not earn it or maybe she may think that she earned it on her back!!!

  3. Seems to me that Gary is a jellyfish. He is so afraid of being alone that he allowed that lazy, manipulating waste of space named Maria ruin his business. Not that he could do much of anything without a checklist anyway. The only thing I give him credit for is that he is still alive and apparently so are his passengers from his days as a commercial pilot. And where is the gratitude for all of the things that Taffer and Co. did for him? Going back to the old "Murphy's Law" ! What is wrong with these folks?

  4. This was a waste of time and money on the part of Bar Rescue. Better Luck next time.

  5. Hey, where did my posts go?

  6. I don't get what was the hold she has on him other than the partnership contract, of course. He can't be thinking that bitch is attractive--he can do so much better. She looks like she was rode hard and put up wet. If she had a nice attitude, then OK it doesn't matter, but she is rough.

  7. I agree, it had to do better as anything other than Murphy's Law. It was a decent concept, so I hope they kept the mystery drink.

  8. I agree that Maria has no business being there anymore but since no modification of ownership was done such as Gary at 50% and Nellie at 50%, that alone is a tell tale sign that Maria gets to stay and mess it up until the bar is out of business. The writing is already on the wall.

  9. Name doesn't need to be about career. Last episode dude was a pitcher and he tried that before Taffer came in. It SUCKED. Second Reno is not Vegas. Landing strip sounds like horrid stripper bar. Lmao!

    ReplyDelete
  10. lol yeah landing strip is not so good either. Murphy's law is kinda lame and overdone but it's not awful.

  11. Awkward is a good word. I did like the back to basics of teaching them mechanics and giving them a scheme which they seemed to be able to execute. So maybe they are trying with the formula..

  12. Yes, she still owns 40%, but that doesn't mean she has a job there. The other two owners have 60% and have the right to fire her. But she still owns 60% so she will get her 20% of the profits, if there are any. Gary just found out you pay dearly when you make a girlfriend your partner.

If Gary was losing $2,000 a month, then it seems like 40% of that loss should have belonged to Maria and the other 20% to Nelly since that is how partnerships work. You own your percentage of the profits... or loses. And if he paid that $2,000 each month out of his pocket, then his partners should owe him money, which should come out of their share of future profits.

It really didn't seem like Gary has any sense. I'm glad he's not piloting commercial jets any more.

  13. I'm not so sure if "Money Bar" is a great name. The name and logo suggest it might be a check cashing, payday advance, or pawn shop that just happens to serve alcohol!

And the magic cocktail that is kept in a vault is a pretty lame idea. What are the odds Gary will keep that thing primed with dry ice to create the "smoke effect" when he unveils it every night?

A bar needs to get the fundamentals right to succeed. Taffer can pack the bar with paid actors for his "grand reopening night" but the bar needs local regulars to be successful.

  14. Agree with the comments about the "Mystery Drink." While the crowd was prompted to cheer and talk about how awesome the Mystery Drink was for the show, I am hoping this isn't a "Jump the Shark" moment where John Taffer relies on cheap gimmicks rather than more solid business ideas.

  15. Either way nothing worked because the business is closed down lol

  16. I think that's what's happening if you look on Google Maps the business is shut down

  17. It is closed look at Google Maps says business is permanently closed

    ReplyDelete
  18. Well Google Maps isn't correct. Go to their Facebook pages and you will see they open and have gone back to Murphys Law

  19. A facebook page that was updated 5 months ago the business is closed unless you work there or know someone that does are you sure because I do and am!

  21. Well Brad, you are a little right. I actually happen to live in Reno and I know Maria, And Gary. They are together again, and she still sits there today.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yes, I agree. Sure Maria can get fired from working (like she really did any of that) in the bar, but as a legal owner, she is entitled to her percentage of the profits. Gary stated that he was paying her each month. She should not have received one cent, because the bar profits were in the negative.

The only way the other two can get rid of Maria is through a hostile buy out. They will have to pay her 40% of the value of the business (that does not mean profits). They don't have that money (at least not as of the broadcast), so they are stuck with her until they can buy her out.

Typical stupid and non-management caused this and most of the other bars in the show to be failures. If you own a bar, it is a business, not a party house. You can't sit around and drink all the booze and let your staff do the same. But, many open bars (as they've said many times in the many shows) that they wanted a "cheap place" where they could party. Then when they wake up one morning with their perpetual hangovers, they realize they need to find a cardboard box and a bridge to live under, because they drank and gave away hundreds of thousands of dollars. I love how they say that they "just don't understand" how they got so much in debt, and they don't know where all the profits went.

  23. Good to see Mr. Taffer having recovered from the "sex" bar and giving solid leadership since then.

You can lead a horse to water right.

  24. I would buy her share out. give her what she invested in the Bar plus 10 %
    $ 0 x 10%= 0.00

  27. regardless of their problems - he had initiative to work at his own bar and be satisfied to just sit on his ass and drink his own profits away. good riddance -in 4 months someone can get a great deal on a bar.

    ReplyDelete
  28. regardless of their breakup, he had little to no initiative to do anything but sit on his ass and drink -and judging by the fact they have gone back to their old ways shows he has no desire to succeed. all he did was salve his ego by throwing her under the bus and getting a free makeover which as it shows he cant even stick to that. it's a match made in dysfunction heaven. all you have to do is wait four months and someone can buy a bar cheap that really wants to make it succeed.

  29. Strip mall bars always seem risky, and this one is no exception. They were only doing 7k a month before the awful rescue.
The owner dint want to be in the bar business, by his own comments. He was loved up and they decided to open a bar.
Bad old name, bad new one, and what a bad concept. Steak and eggs? Perfect for Nevada heat.
I think this was a throw away for the show.

  33. Really disappointing episode. Seemed like all weak gimmicks and no "bar science." And a strip mall bar is hard to make nice. It still looks crappy to me. I don't think they'll pull out of their tailspin.

    ReplyDelete
  34. They shouldn't show a crowd shot if people can't fake enthusiasm. That certainly looked mysterious, but not in a good way. Why would anyone agree to drink that? Looked like pond sludge.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Actually, Gary and Nellie at 60% could easily disown her and then do 50% Gary and 50% Nellie. I'm sure Nellie's ready to do it but Gary's another story tho.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Yes... they can "fire her" from her job as manager, but they cannot "disown" her 40% ownership. You just can't vote to strip a partner of ownership rights.

If it was that simple then Bill Gates could still own 100% of Microsoft, despite selling stock to others.

This episode really shows everything that is wrong with Bar Rescue. Contrived story, unbelievable characters, and bad actors playing the roles of customers.

    ReplyDelete
  37. if the bar is loosing money he can ask her to pay 40%. if not turn over a percentage or her stock to match the lost money every month

    ReplyDelete
  38. Michael.... it gets really interesting.

The buyout price isn't based on the original purchase price, it is based on the current value. 40% of a bar that is losing money is worth nothing. And she doesn't have to sell her share if she doesn't want to.

A hostile buyout is when a majority of the shareholders vote to sell the business to someone else.

What Gary needs to do is offer her something for her share, reminding her that the business is essentially worthless, and will probably go under, meaning she would end up with nothing. You can actually have a business professionally appraised to determine it's real value.

If he offers her $5,000 she would probably take it, since she didn't put a dime into the business. It will be either that, or take nothing when they go bankrupt.

    ReplyDelete
  39. In "Hostile Takeover" episode, it was proven that one of the owners could be disowned if the other two had 60% ownership combined.

I seriously don't get owners who are stupid enough to throw away the changes and advice from Bar Rescue and go back to the very thing that wasn't working in the first place! Wtf? Beating a dead horse!

  41. What a joke-- These people get into businesses about which they know nothing---and fail-- Call BR for a bailout and free publicity-- Then undo all the positive changes made. Idiots.
