O'Face's Liquor License Renewal Rejected By City Council

Last night at the Council Bluffs, Iowa City Council meeting, the O'Face bar was trying to get their liquor license renewed, and it was rejected by the city council by a vote of 3-2.  There were seven liquor license applications reviewed that night, and O'Face's was the only one rejected.

The three city council members who voted against the renewal said that O'Face's appearance on Bar Rescue put the city in a bad light, and the mayor agreed.  They said the city is suffering as a result of the show and the mayor has received emails from around the country telling him how embarrassing it was for the city.

The mayor told the owner Matthew Overmyer "I understand this is a reality show, but the depiction of this inaccuracy has caused irreparable harm to the city.  This sort of show concerns me that you would hold out this community in a false light.  We all make mistakes, but we have to pay for them.”

Matt said that he has gotten a lot of negative feedback from people and even death threats and apologized for putting Council Bluffs in a bad light.  He was quoted as saying the experience has "been nothing but hell."   Matt plans to appeal the council decision to try to keep his license.

I guess as Jon Taffer would say, SHUT IT DOWN!

The local news is at the bar tonight interviewing employees, so we will see what they have to say tonight after the story airs.  I will do an update to this post or do another post if there is anything interesting said.

  1. Now they should consider renaming the bar O'Sh*t!!

  2. Good riddance I say, these are two owners who absolutely deserve to fail moreso then anyone else who's ever been on the show. hope they won't be able to get the decision repealed, without a license they'll be closed down in no time.

  3. I normally don't root for people's business to fail. But having worked for abusive bosses before, I can say that these people have no business running a bar.

  4. This bar is named On face that's ridiculous how do families explain this to their kids as they drive by. The name alone makes the city look stupid they allowed the name. There are fights the owners drink on the job this is a dangerous situation for customers the staff fights themselves and people drive home drunk even the owners I think the city needed the show to see what really happens there. If it stays open there will be an accident or worse it's just a waiting game I just hope no one gets physically hurt!

  5. The city cannot do that just for a TV show there were other problems with duii's

  7. The poor guys at Hit That Dive...where will they go now for mason jars filled with beer?

  8. Shutting this shithole down is doing a favor to everyone involved. Maybe this will be the wakeup call that gets the owners into therapy where they belong.

  10. It's amazing that no one got food poisioning or contacted a disease they should be banned from ever owning any kind of business that handle food or drinks. And the City of Council Bluff's should inspect all businesses that deal with food and beverages. Shame on the City Health Department. The Health Department should have a annual inspection.

Yeah it's a blessing in disguise.

  12. I feel like they're still better owners than Steve from Headhunters. At least they pay their employees...

    ReplyDelete
  13. Steve never assaulted his employees like Matt did though(at least AFAIK).

  14. Living in nearby Omaha, this episode brought remarks from many of my peers that this was "typical Council Bluffs" behavior. CB already has a horrid reputation around here.

  16. The mayor is somewhat delusional calling the depiction of the bar an inaccuracy. I realize there is some production in reality shows and some shows are completely scripted and fabricated. However, shows like Bar Rescue and Kitchen Nightmares, are pretty real and only partially scripted for production value. Matthew and his wife and the employees at OFace would be great actors if this was scripted, as their "performance" on the program were extremely convincing. Unfortunately, they are not actors and their behavior was as real and genuine as it was deplorable. They deserved to lose their license, they deserve to lose their business. The only employee I feel for was Syck. He was honest and upstanding and the only one who stood out from the rest of them. I hope he has found a job, I could care less about the others.

  17. O'no! Renewal liquor license ap - DENIED! I guess that whole "business suicide on the installment plan" has shifted into a higher gear ...
What I will never be able to wrap my head around is ... how do people live like that? They live like pigs, don't think better of themselves to do better for themselves, don't think enough of themselves to tell an employer to fuck off after being treated like that, hit back! ... There's enough indictments to go all the way around. Several times! Self respecting swine would waller around in that sty!

    ReplyDelete
  18. That bar has a serious track record of multiple calls to the police. I'm sure the local police aren't too far away when the doors are open.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I think the mayor wasn't so much agreeing that the depiction was inaccurate as he was saying that the depiction itself was harmful to the community.

    ReplyDelete
  20. More likely it was the final excuse they needed to shut down a place that already had a spotty record.

  21. I hated them, Jon taffeta shouldn't have even stayed as long as he did n I would've beet the crap out of matts stepdaughter if I worked there. Bitch needs it!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Whoops. I meant to put Taffer, stupid auto correct!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Ok but when they are teenagers, what? They can't come up with something more creative n better than o face? Especially when the name don't even fit that bar anyway

    ReplyDelete
  24. Step daughter? What did Vanessa do exactly? Or is it me you are talking about. Pretty sure cerisa and I are best friends. Come on kids, we aren't that naive. Are we?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Thanks to the few smart people on here. The others, keep watching your "reality" tv.

    ReplyDelete
  26. As the parent of teens, I can assure you that most of them have heard and seen worse -- and many would figure it out and appreciate the name.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Seriously... regardless of how embellished Bar Rescue is, O'Face is an awful place and a horribly-run business. I don't know why the Hit That Dive folks have been going to bat for them so hard. There are much better businesses in the area that deserve the support than this hell-hole.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why would you choose to act that way on TV? Didn't you anticipate this would bring a certain amount of ridicule? Why subject yourself to "nothing but hell?"

    ReplyDelete
  29. The name is still trashy and that is all you are going to attract.

    ReplyDelete
  30. And good luck to you on finding a new job......

    ReplyDelete
  31. This exactly.

In Pennsylvania, a bar like O'Face would be classified as a "nuisance bar" and forced to close.

    ReplyDelete
  32. The name is so trashy that the owner was embarrassed when Jon Taffer asked her to show him her "O'Face."

    ReplyDelete
  33. This man and his staff including his bossy fat bipolar wife were disgusting. I'm so glad Jon didn't "Rescue" this POS. There is no hope with a owner/staff like that operating anything.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Oh child....

    ReplyDelete
  35. Good, that place doesnt deserve to be in business. Close them down.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Probably a man hating lesbian

  37. Bigger picture Jon Mr Overmeyer is a member of the Air Force. The Air Force values it relationships with the surrounding communities. It pained me to see my home town portrayed as some seedy backwoods hick town

  38. Did you see those pizzas with freezer burn

  39. Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn. It's not hating when you are stating the facts Goober.

  40. Now where will the trash of Council Bluffs go?

  41. Sorry I met Amanda should have clarified

I would tend to agree . I don't know how the liquor laws are there but in Indiana the state issues liquor licenses . I have never ever heard of a town controlling that

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't think anyone really wanted to see her trashy O Face!

Obviously you are that naive of an infant Amanda if you did not realize how much acting like a dumb violent brat on national TV would bite you in the ass. When the bar closes, no legitimate business is going to hire you because they do not want that kind of negative attention on their business. People do not have to have watched the show, a simple Google search will turn up full episodes and an email or Facebook search through WABAC will turn up every nasty comment you have ever made since you obviously cared more about your fleeting fame than your long term reputation and used enough information for the greenest n00b on the web to turn up what a waste of space you would be in any job.

  45. Rambling PsychopathMay 19, 2014 at 3:20 AM

Obviously you are not one of those smart people since you think there is any merit to the responses you have given. All you have done is given any future employer plenty of reason to not hire you. People do not have to know you to know they do not want the drama you bring in their business. Reality TV or not, people judge you by what they are shown not what you keep secret.

  46. What about the bar fights and assults? They've gotten so many complaints on this bar. The city has to protect themselves AND OTHERS from these drunks. Would anyone send their daughters in that bar, HELL NO

    ReplyDelete
  47. Those guys are looking at it strictly from their viewpoint. It's a blog dedicated to finding good places to get their drink on. So when they see they can buy a quart Mason jar full of beer for $3.50, they go "Hell, yeah!" and are more than willing to buy into what the owner is telling them. They have a video up of an "interview" with the owner that occurred after the rejection of their license renewal.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I know, right? Regardless of how the show was edited, and regardless of whether or not the things we saw were "real" or "staged", the following things were recorded on camera:

-A manager picking a physical fight with an employee (grounds for firing pretty much anywhere)
-Ownership telling the attacked employee that they had it coming, before firing her.
-Sitting in their office BSing, when they should have been training.
    -Ownership physically attacking an employee
-Ownership offering another employee a raise if he physically attacks the first employee via enforced defenestration.

How could anyone think that those incidents right there are not going to come off as anything other than bad?

  49. He actually said (my wife's got my balls in ah little glass jar in her purse) ........That sealed it for me .

  50. They are an embarrassment to good neighborhood bars where people just want to socialize. Fighting drunk is dangerous and the city did good by not letting them continue.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Seem like a family of idiots why are they in business? If the city was doing their job shut the bar down

  57. you are the poster child for street trash, congratulations...

  58. I cannot believe that no placed no charges!!! I'm so sick to my stomach watching the show. The city should be Embarrassed that thy did not take the anitiative to place charges!!!!! Both owners are a disgrace and that female owner is just a Discusting Human-being. What's so sad is that she's the reason that the family looks so bad and a mess!!!! They are a Failure to LIFE!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I called the bar last night. The number is disconnected. And all info that was on their Facebook page a month ago is now gone, except for address and DC'd phone number.

    ReplyDelete
  67. As shitty as this bar is, Council Bluffs needs to look deeper into how it's ran if one shit bar is affecting the town that much.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Yeah, the employees get paid, abused and slapped around.

    ReplyDelete
  69. So it would appear that had the bar gotten approved at the local level, they more than likely would have faced a rejection at the state level.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Let's see that O'Face again?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Or call it the "O" range juice bar!!! LOL glad those people are scumbags and he is a disgrace to the uniform!

    ReplyDelete
  72. What a bunch of ignorant inbred pigs those owners and most employees are! THEY are what gave Council Bluffs a bad name, not the "show"! I'd like to know who the "2" are, that voted for them to keep their license. I'm guessing extended inbred family members.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Good for the Mayor & City Council. A-C-C-O-U-N-T-A-B-I-L-T-Y!!!!! Great Job City officials...this type of behavior is reprehensible. A liquor license is a priviledge...not a right. Again, good, no great job City Officials!
